There are so many variations, that this unity ceremony can be personalized for any situation. It is a great way to include children and/or parents in the ceremony. For beach weddings, a handful of sand can be placed at the top or bottom of the jar! Your wedding officiant will help you with wording to best represent what you desire!

Family Unity Sand

When adding a child to the ceremony, we place the child's color in the center, so they are surrounded by the love, guidance, and support of the couple!

Here is sample wording for the unity sand ceremony:

"Groom and Bride,

You have just sealed your relationship by the giving and receiving of rings. I will now ask your son and daughter to join us as we begin a symbolic expression of the family union.

This beautiful ceremony is symbolized by combining these four vessels of sand

which create a lasting visual representation of the promises and intentions for your marriage. Our families lay the foundation for our being.

The black sand represents Groom and all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be. Please pour half of your sand.

The white sand represents Bride, and all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be. Please pour half of your sand.

Half your sand lays the foundation of you family.

The pink sand represents Daughter and all that you are, and all that you contribute to the family. Please pour your sand.

The green sand represents Son and and all that you are, and all that you contribute to the family. Please pour your sand.

Groom and Bride will now pour their remaining sand. Your children’s sand is in the center, just as they are the center of your world, and the visual effect layers them in your love and protection. Notice that each color holds its own unique beauty, strength, and character. They can stand on their own and be whole, without the need of anything else. However, when all are blended together they create an entirely new and more extraordinary entity. You will notice that these individual colors do not cease to exist, but are now blended together, and it is this blending that is marriage and the unity of family."

Here is another sample wording for just the Bride and Groom:

Bride and Groom, today you join your separate lives together. The two separate bottles of sand symbolize your separate lives, separate families and separate sets of friends. They represent all that you are and all that you will ever be as an individual. They also represent your lives before today.

As these two containers of sand are poured into the third container, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be.

Here is another wording example:

Three colors of sand are layered in a vase to symbolize the importance of the individuals within the marriage and the joining of the two lives into one entity.

The sculpture begins with a layer of neutral sand to symbolize that the marriage is grounded.

The next layers are the individual colors representing the Bride and Groom which symbolizes that the foundation of the marriage is based on the strength of the individuals.

The final layer is the Bride and Groom’s colors combined to symbolize the joining of their lives as one in marriage.

(Of course beach sand could be the neutral color!!)
